Appendicitis:

Appendicitis usually refers to inflammation of the appendix. The appendix is 2 to 20 cm long cylindrical organ. It is attached to the colon. If there is an infection in the appendix for any reason, it becomes swollen and inflamed. This is called appendicitis. Appendicitis is considered a very urgent condition as there is a risk of death if it is not treated quickly and the appendix is removed quickly through surgery. If the appendix ruptures for any reason, the germs spread throughout the abdomen. This condition is known as peritonitis. This is a very dangerous situation. In this case, the patient is at risk of death. Again there is low-intensity appendicitis known as appendicitis rumbling. Sudden pain in the lower abdomen may not be the cause of appendicitis. In such cases, abdominal pain can be relieved by taking medication as advised by the doctor.

Signs and symptoms of appendicitis:

Appendicitis can have the following signs and symptoms:

  • There may be constant pain in the abdomen. The pain starts around the navel and gradually increases to the right side of the lower part of the navel.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Cough.
  • Constipation.
  • Fever.
  • Flatulence.
  • Diarrhoea.
  • Shivering in the cold.
  • There may be side pain in the body.

Causes of appendicitis:

  • If the entrance to the appendix is blocked by ficulith (hard stool pebbles).
  • If the entrance to the appendix is blocked by a portion of undigested food.
  • Appendicitis can be caused by pinworms and by viral or bacterial infections.
  • Also, if for some reason digested food, feces or worms enter it, then there is a lack of blood and nutrients and appendicitis may occur.

Who can have appendicitis:

  • There is no certain age for appendicitis. Appendicitis may occur at any age. However, those between the ages of 11 to 20 are more likely to get the disease.
  • In many cases appendicitis is also caused by birth or heredity. If someone in the family has had the disease before, the children can get the disease.
  • Appendicitis can occur all year round but in most cases it occurs in winter or between October to May.
  • Men are slightly more likely to get the disease than women.
  • Eating less fiber and more refined carbohydrates increases the risk of appendicitis.
  • In the case of boys, children with cystic fibrosis are more likely to develop appendicitis.
  • Gastrointestinal infections such as Amebiasis, Bacterial Gastroenteritis, Mumps, Coxsackievirus B and Adenovirus infections increase the risk of appendicitis.

 Diagnosis of appendicitis:

The specialist doctor can look at the patient and make sure that the patient has appendicitis without any examination from his experience. For example, if the patient coughs, he feels severe pain in the abdomen. On the other hand, if the left side of the lower abdomen is pressed, there is severe pain in the right lower abdomen, or if the right side of the lower abdomen is pressed, the left lower abdomen is felt severe pain, then it may be pain of appendicitis. Pain in the lower right side of the abdomen can be caused by a variety of reasons, especially in women. Therefore, before the operation, the doctor should check various issues to make sure that it is pain in the appendix.

The following tests can also be used to determine if there is pain in the appendix:

Blood test: If the amount of white blood cells in the blood increases, then it must be understood that you have an infection.

Urine test: Urine test is done to find out whether it is actually pain of appendicitis or any other pain such as infection and pain in urinary tract, kidney problem and pain and so urine test is allowed.

Imaging test: Abdominal X-ray or abdominal ultrasound or CT scan is given to confirm.

Treatment of appendicitis:

If you have appendicitis, you should not neglect to seek the advice of a specialist. This is because if the operation is not done in time, the appendix may rupture and the infection may spread to the whole abdomen and there is a risk of death of the patient. Since the specific treatment for appendicitis is surgery, the operation should be arranged as per the doctor's advice without delay. In many cases, if necessary, doctors advise patients with this disease to take medicine.
